Welcome to Drab Remarks, a blog about politics, culture, and Christian faith. (For those curious, “Drab Remark” is an anagram of my name.)
A bit about myself: I’m a writer, editor, and nonprofit communications specialist with a politics, philosophy, and economics degree from The King’s College and a Master of Divinity degree from Missio Seminary. I spent four years as the managing editor at BioLogos, an organization at the front lines of the science/faith conversation, and my current day job is at Bethany Christian Services as a content writer.
I’m starting this blog to advance an idea that has been percolating in my mind for over a decade now, shaped by a lifetime of experience inside the American Evangelical Christian church and subculture: I believe that the American church has been hijacked and compromised by the false belief that Christians must choose between “conservatism” and “liberalism” for their theological, cultural, and political identity. I believe that both “conservativism” and “liberalism,” as they are commonly understood, are shallow and incomplete visions for Christian faithfulness in today’s world. I believe that the events of the past few years—and, in particular, the upheavals of 2020—have demonstrated a clear need for a new vision for faithful Christian witness that moves beyond those labels.
